Institutional Review Board
Does your project need IRB approval?
1. Is your project considered
research?
For IRB purposes, research is defined as "a systematic
investigation, including research development, testing and evaluation, designed to develop or contribute to generalizable
knowledge".
2. Does it involve human
participants?
A human participant is a living individual about whom or
from whom an investigator obtains data through intervention orinteraction with the individual or through records containing
identifiable private information.
If you answer "yes" to both of these questions, you need to
have the IRB approve your project before you begin conducting
any research. Click here to find out whether your proposal might qualify for
expedited review.
